In Panama the sport is becoming ever more popular, which was proven at this years Balboa Yacht Club Regatta, which marks the beginning of the 2007 Cayuco season.
This year there was a record number of boats in attendance for this annual, and highly rated event, with races being held for different classes, including Males, Females and Mixed. With so many boats in attendance, there was the sense that a record or two could be broken at this years event, and onlookers were not disappointed, as a total of 4 records fell, with the highlight being the Male Trophy Class who smashed the previous record.
One class winner that failed to set a new record was in the Mixed Open Category, where this year the Police boat was competing. Unlike previous years where it has always been a male only crew, there was the surprise inclusion of a female member, forcing them to compete in the Mixed open class. Yet whilst failing to set a record, they won their category, and showed that they are still a force to be reckoned with, lets face it, you wouldn't want to be being chased by them in a Cayuco!!
Cayuco Racing is fast becoming a big sport in Panama, especially with their Ocean to Ocean race through the Panama Canal which takes place every year. |
