Panama Information - North of Panama City (Gamboa, San Blas)

San Blas

The San Blas Islands are situated on the Caribbean side of Panama, to the North of Panama City. There are over 200 miles of islands running along the coast down towards Colombia. The reefs surrounding these Islands are stunning and great for snorkeling and some diving.

Found on these Islands are the famous Kuna Indians, who have lived here in Paradise since long before Columbus ever arrived. If you are interested in the native cultures of Panama, then the San Blas Islands are a must for you. However no luxury accomodation will be found out here, and the diet wlll consist almost purely of locally caught fish. Which could be a problem for those not in to seafood.

The Kuna Indians live a pretty simple life, with most days consisting of the women and children rowing their dugout canoes accross to the mainland to do washing and play, while the men tend to their Yucca and Coconut plantations. They have very little need or desire for material goods that we have become accustomed to, so dont exxpect to have to pay much while out there. Although do make sure not to take photographs of them until you have paid the usual $1 levy that is customary. The Islands are run be the tribal leaders, who will settle anu disputes, meaning that the local police force rarely bother the Kuna.

Many people choose to visit the islands on a day trip, as only the real cultural enthusiasts usually stay, due to the very basic accomodation provided, and the strict rules that people are advised to follow, such as everyone keeping themselves covered up, and especially women not to show their bikinis in public.

The easiest way to visit is via a short plane ride, although it is possible to access the area via 4X4 and then travel accross in canoes to the islands.

Hotels in the area can be found here, with the Dolphin Bay Lodge being a particulary reccomended one.

Gamboa

Gamboa, another tourist region North of Panama City, is just 45 minutes away. The road follows the Panama Canal half way to its Caribbean exit, into the Gamboa region, known for its diverse wildlife and immense variety of plants and trees within its stunning rainforests. This diverse rainforrest region is vital to supporting the Panama Canal. Lake Gatun is where boats passing from one ocean to the other have to pass through, and the river Chagres, is where the Canals fresh water supply comes from, without it the center would not have enough water, due to the lock system in place.

The Gamboa region is great for people wanting to fish for rainbow bass, as the canal and surrounding water pockets are ideal hiding places for these predators, and therefore great places to catch them. Other great wildlfie that can be seen includes crocodiles, monkeys and sloths in the trees.

Undoubtadly the best place to stay in Gamboa, to experience all that it has to offer is the wonderful Eco Resort. The hotel is located on the banks of Lake Gatun and offers great accomodation right in the heart of the rainforest. Located just 45 minutes from Panama City, and the international airport, Gamboa is the ideal beginning or end location for your exploration trip around Panama.

Hotels in the area can be found here, with recommended hotels including the before mentioned Gamboa Rainforest Eco Resort and Canopy Tower.

Portobelo

Portobelo is located on the Caribbean Coast of Panama, in the Colon Province in the northeast. This area is about halfway between the Panama Canal and the San Blas region. Access to this area is good, with a 1 and a half hour car journey up the highway from Panama City, or there is also the option to take a short flight, approximately 15 minutes, from the Marcos A. Gelabert Airport in Albrook, Panama City, to Colon City, with a further 40 minutes by car.

Portobelo has alot to offer visitors to the area. There are some great hotels, offering comfortable stays, with good service to make your stay as enjoyable and stress free as possible. The restaurants in the area are great, all serving the freshest food, with local ingredients caught in the area. Because of where this is situated, the majority of food will have a seafood theme to it. In the area alot of water sports take place, with the opportunity to rent scuba diving equipment, jet skis or boats for fishing, or just relaxing on the water. There are also a number of guided tours in the area, as well as guided fishing trips etc.

The best things to do whilst in Portobelo has to include the scuba diving. Portobelo is known as one of Panama's best Caribbean coast reef areas, offering visitors stunning reefs, which are surprisingly close to the shore, and do not require deep diving, making them ideal for beginners to the past time. With that in mind, allot of scuba diving schools have been set up in the area, so anyone coming to this area can experience the whole new world below the surface of the water.
